The Annual Effective Speaking Contest hosted by the Shelburne & District Lions Club is attended usually by all four elementary schools in Shelburne and area, Primrose Elementary, Hyland Heights Elementary, Glenbrook Elementary however Centennial Hyland Elementary did not have entries this year. The contest is a very unique forum to help build confidence when public speaking, is a wonderful opportunity to win prizes, advance to higher levels competing and the real treat is often for the audiences. Tackling a wide variety of topics, the competing students delivered speeches covering Sports, Drinking and Driving, The Art of Public Speaking, The LGBTQ Community, The Holocaust, The Art of Trading, Addressing “#Me Too” Movement and Inequality. The talented local youth created quite a challenge for judges. Perhaps what is most striking was the revelation to the audience that our youth are very interested in relevant topics in their world. The competitors’ voices were very strong, articulate and most importantly, passionate. Best Wishes to winners as they move on to further compete.
