When local grandmother Deanna Avison(Above: R) began Hearts Wide Open For Autism, four years ago, working along side Megan Young,(Above:L) Manager of the Shelburne Golf & Country Club, neither one of these dynamic women had any idea of the wonderful and everlasting impact they would be making on local elementary students living with Autism. Avison and Young hoped they would be able to raise some money that they would donate to local elementary schools that could enable schools to purchase learning tools such as iPads and other necessary tools that the Dufferin Board of Education simply cannot afford to provide. Continuously exceeding expectations, this annual event has helped not just a few kids living with Autism, but many and that help in turn extends to teachers having the necessary tools to provide enriched educations.
The annual event consists of a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, Silent Auction, and this year a West Trip was up for grabs and it all takes place nestled in the beautiful landscape of the Shelburne Golf and Country Club. It’s a wonderful evening out of fun, delicious food, a wonderful networking experience and a great way to support local elementary students, families and teachers living with those who live with Autism. When living with those who live with Autism, teachers, parents, families and friends must all pool resources together and help becoming that village who helps to raise a child. Shelburne, hasn’t been a village in a long time but there is no doubt of their support for Avison and Young’s, Hearts Wide Open for Autism.
“We had another successful year. We raised $13015.71 and to date have raised in 4 years over $37,500.00. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and as always Murder for Hire Dinner Theatre Troupe were fantastic. The Westjet winner is PETER REYNOLDS of Orangeville. We are very grateful to all our amazing sponsors, silent auction donators, to all those that came out to the fundraiser, and all those who purchased raffle tickets for Westjet. Your support is very much appreciated. See you next year Saturday April 4th, 2020. Thank you,” commented Avison, adding,”Thank you so much. I can’t believe how much we raised and that next year will be our 5th Annual. Now more than ever with all the government cuts these funds are going to be needed. There is no doubt that Shelburne and surrounding area people have Opened their Hearts for our children with Autism. I am very humbled and grateful with all the support these wonderful people have given. I appreciate it.”
